Apple has released a support document outlining three recommendations to accelerate Spotlight indexing on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and other operating systems introduced at this year's WWDC. Spotlight indexing builds a local searchable catalog of device data, enabling rapid retrieval of apps, files, messages, photos, contacts, settings and other content for Spotlight and Siri. The process runs on each device individually and may require hours or days for devices with extensive data. Apple noted that iOS 26.6 included preliminary optimizations intended to prepare the index for the upcoming iOS 27 release. According to Apple, indexing speeds up when the device is not in active use, is connected to a power source, and has an internet connection via Wi‑Fi or Ethernet to download necessary data. Mac users can monitor progress through an indicator at the top of the Spotlight or Siri window after pressing Command‑Space, while iPhone, iPad and other device users may receive a Settings notification indicating that Search and Siri are still optimizing; Mail also displays a separate notification for email indexing.
