A car drove into a crowd of pedestrians near a train station in Caen, Normandy, killing at least one person and injuring ten others, police said.

The incident occurred near a bar where a fight had been reported, according to local media.

Seven of the injured were in critical condition and three suffered minor injuries, regional prefect David Claviere told AFP.

All victims appeared to be men between the ages of 17 and 40, Claviere added.

Bruno Coutanceau, a senior security official for Caen, said investigators were not treating the event as a terrorist act at this stage, noting that the investigation was ongoing.

The suspect, a 26‑year‑old man born in Russia, was arrested about 20 km (12 miles) away in Ouistreham after a search operation, police said.

He had no prior known links to intelligence services and was only known to police for traffic offences, Claviere said.

Authorities have opened a criminal investigation led by detectives from Caen’s Specialised Crime Division, and the area around the train station has been cordoned off.

Local officials urged residents to avoid the vicinity while the inquiry continues.

The motive for the crash remains undetermined, and no charges have been filed against the suspect.
