EA confirmed on October 21 that it is eliminating approximately 400 positions across several studios as part of a broader restructuring effort. The cuts affect employees at BioWare, Ripple Effect, Maxis and Full Circle, the teams behind franchises such as Mass Effect, Battlefield, The Sims and Skate. EA described the decision as "difficult" but necessary to streamline operations after its recent acquisition by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Affected workers will receive severance and outplacement support, and some may be offered internal transfers.

The company also announced the closure of BioWare, a Canadian developer with a 30‑year history and a reputation for narrative‑driven role‑playing games. The studio had been working on a new entry in the Mass Effect series, which has now been cancelled. EA issued a statement acknowledging BioWare’s contributions to the genre while emphasizing that the shutdown was not taken lightly.

In addition, EA paused development of Project Lotus, a new installment in The Sims franchise, and redirected resources toward an unnamed Project Evergreen title. The upcoming Skate sequel will remain online but will be supported by a reduced team, with the company promising a clearer roadmap for future updates.

EA Sports continues to operate with a strong portfolio, including annual sports releases and two new projects: a social‑focused open‑world football game codenamed Project Gridiron and a revival of the Fight Night series after a 15‑year hiatus. The Battlefield franchise, which EA called a "great success," will see further entries, and a collaborative effort between Respawn and DICE is slated to produce a new title, widely expected to be a Star Wars: Battlefront sequel. Apex Legends will also receive continued investment.

Other projects still in development include an Iron Man‑themed game and the next Star Wars Jedi installment. EA’s chief financial officer noted that the company will concentrate on fewer large‑scale initiatives to improve profitability.

The restructuring follows EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout by the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, a transaction that remains the largest of its kind in business history. Analysts have warned that the debt burden could drive further cost‑cutting measures, including AI‑driven development tools to reduce expenses.

Industry observers have expressed concern that the shift in ownership may influence the creative direction of future titles, given the new shareholders’ differing cultural and political priorities.
