The network‑accessible component of the slicer communicates with external servers using a specific User‑Agent string, a practice the AGPL was intended to prevent. Community members have reverse‑engineered the code and are developing alternatives such as OrcaSlicer, which is mirrored in an SFC repository. The SFC reported that the presentation attracted new participants unfamiliar with copyleft and raised more than $250,000 in a fundraiser that exceeded its goal, allowing the hiring of a full‑time litigation attorney. The organization is urging users to request complete source code and to use contractual or copyright enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance.
