A U.S. magistrate judge has ordered former President Donald Trump to sit for a court‑ordered deposition in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC by 11 December. The case stems from a 2021 Panorama segment that edited portions of a speech Trump delivered before the Capitol riot. Trump had previously canceled a scheduled deposition on 16 October, citing national‑security concerns, while the BBC argued he was instead attending a campaign rally in Georgia and a fundraiser at Mar‑a‑Lago. The BBC’s counsel told the Miami court that the discovery period is nearing its close and that failure to comply could result in sanctions, including dismissal of the suit. In a recent filing, Trump’s attorneys suggested he could appear for the interview between 11 and 22 January next year and claimed the BBC mischaracterized his avoidance. The lawsuit alleges the BBC “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring” the speech, though the network has apologized for the editing error and argued the broadcast was not available in the United States, leading it to seek dismissal of the case. Earlier, Trump had agreed to drop claims against BBC Studios after the network asserted it played no role in producing the documentary.
