Kubernetes version 1.37, nicknamed Garhwal, was released on Wednesday. The release contains 67 changes that include the graduation of the metrics API to general availability and the deprecation of legacy components. The CNCF reported that 82 percent of container users run Kubernetes in production, up from 66 percent in 2023. The same survey indicated that 66 percent of organizations hosting generative AI models use Kubernetes for inference workloads. The metrics API has been in beta for nine years and was promoted to general availability in this release. Release lead Dipesh Rawat said the API has been widely used in production for years. Kube-dns will be removed in Kubernetes 1.40, requiring cluster updates before that version. IPVS support will be removed in Kubernetes 1.43. Nodes that still use cgroup v1 will no longer be initialized starting with Kubernetes 1.35, with a temporary workaround available for a limited period. New capabilities introduced include pod-level checkpoint and restore (KEP 5823) as an alpha feature, HPAScaleToZero (KEP 2021) enabled by default, resilient watch cache initialization (KEP 4568) to manage API server startup, and KYAML (KEP 5295), a strict subset of YAML that enforces Kubernetes conventions. The development cycle lasted 15 weeks and involved contributions from over 1,700 individuals and 212 companies.
