Microsoft announced on August 31 that its disc‑to‑digital program will launch for Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, allowing owners to obtain digital licenses for physical game discs while retaining the ability to sell or trade the discs.
The program expands on earlier Xbox features such as FPS Boost and backwards compatibility, which required developer participation, but Microsoft said this release does not impose such a requirement on publishers.
The feature will be available for most games at launch, with additional titles to be added over time. Users can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox console and launching the game; the resulting digital license provides access to Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming where supported, without affecting the disc’s functionality.
If a disc is moved to a different console, the digital license is revoked until the disc is re‑inserted into the original console, at which point the license can be reclaimed.
Microsoft has not disclosed any limits on how many times a digital license can be obtained per game, and no mandatory developer participation has been announced.
The launch provides a pathway to digital benefits while preserving physical ownership, and Microsoft indicated that further rollout details will follow.
