Nvidia has begun distributing version 621.01 graphics drivers that incorporate Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) technology, aiming to reduce the time personal computer games spend compiling shaders after installation or driver updates. The update, rolled out on Wednesday, enables faster initial game launches for users of RTX and RTX Spark series graphics cards.
ASD operates by delivering precompiled shaders directly to the system, bypassing the need for on-the-fly compilation that traditionally delays gameplay. According to Nvidia's release notes, the feature is initially available in two titles: the newly released Gears of War prequel and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The company also notes that ASD will eventually support hardware from AMD, Intel and Qualcomm, though performance may vary across different configurations.
The technology builds on existing Nvidia functionality, including Automatic Shader Compilation, which prevents games from requiring recompilation after driver installations. This approach mirrors the streamlined experience offered by gaming consoles, where a single hardware profile eliminates the need for such optimizations. In contrast, PC systems must accommodate diverse hardware combinations, making shader compilation a persistent bottleneck.
Independent testing conducted by the reporter demonstrated that ASD enabled game startup times of under one minute on both a desktop workstation and an Asus ROG Ally X handheld device following installation of Gears of War: E-Day. This represents a significant improvement over titles that previously required 10 to 15 minutes of preprocessing before gameplay could begin.
Sony has separately announced plans to implement Quick Spectral Super Resolution on base PlayStation 5 consoles, while AMD has indicated that FSR 4.1 will arrive on Xbox Series X|S platforms in the coming months. These developments reflect broader industry efforts to align PC performance characteristics with the plug-and-play simplicity of dedicated gaming hardware.
