Panic, the developer of the Playdate handheld, will refund $12.36 to customers who paid a tariff surcharge on the device. The company raised the price after U.S. tariffs on imported goods took effect, then the Supreme Court ruled the tariffs unlawful and the government issued refunds to importers. Panic said the refunds would be processed automatically and deposited into customers’ accounts within a few days. The firm noted that its margins are thin and it could not absorb the tariff cost, but after receiving the refunds it decided to return the amount to buyers. The announcement follows similar pricing adjustments by larger console makers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, which have not offered direct refunds to consumers. Class-action lawsuits alleging price violations remain pending, and Nintendo has argued that its price changes were modest and that consumers accepted the advertised prices. Panic said it was returning the amount because the money was not its to keep, and noted the effort required to secure the government refund and to build a processing system.
