A five-month high of $110 per barrel for Brent crude and record gasoline prices in Asia and Europe have begun reshaping household budgets worldwide. The surge adds to transport, heating and packaging costs, amplifying inflation and pushing borrowing costs higher.

The Reuters Power Up newsletter by columnist Ron Bousso curates these developments. Geopolitical tensions tied to Iran have lifted diesel prices to record levels; British diesel pumps reached £2.00 per litre for the first time this month, while U.S. diesel hit $6.53 per gallon in September. In response, the administration of former President Donald Trump authorized temporary access to red‑dyed diesel, a tax‑exempt fuel used off‑road, through the end of the year.

The price jump is reflected in a chart tracking the cost of filling a 50‑litre diesel tank, which shows a steep climb since pre‑Iran‑war levels. Higher energy costs feed into inflation metrics that central banks are trying to curb with tighter monetary policy. In Britain, consumer price index rose to 3.5% in August, with core inflation at 2.8% and the benchmark interest rate at 3.75%. The Reserve Bank of Australia lifted its cash rate to a 15‑year high, prompting variable mortgage rates to climb and adding roughly A$3,900 annually to repayments on a typical A$731,000 loan.

In the United States, 30‑year mortgage rates have risen from about 6.1% to 7.5%, dampening home‑purchase activity. Fixed‑rate borrowers dominate the market, but the higher rates increase monthly payments for new buyers. Meanwhile, heating oil prices in New York are projected to climb 47% from the previous winter, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors Association. EnergyUK estimates a 10% year‑on‑year increase in gas bills for British households this quarter.

Because most plastics originate from oil or natural gas, the crude price surge filters into packaging costs. Consultancy MAT notes that packaging typically accounts for 5% to 15% of a product’s manufacturing cost, affecting everything from bottles to clothing. PET resin prices rose 7% in August compared with October 2025. In the United States, the producer price index for rubber and plastics climbed sharply, contributing to a broader rise in consumer prices where gasoline accounted for more than half of the increase.

The Food and Agriculture Organization reports that global food inflation is expected to accelerate through 2027, driven by shipping disruptions and higher fertilizer costs, which are also gas‑derived. The FAO food price index reached a four‑year high in September, underscoring the broad reach of the energy shock across daily life.
