President Donald Trump will address overseas cryptocurrency fraud during a White House cybercrime briefing on Wednesday, according to a senior administration official.
The event will showcase actions taken by U.S. law enforcement to disrupt criminal networks that use digital assets to defraud victims abroad. Officials say the administration has stopped roughly $833 million in fraudulent crypto transactions linked to foreign scam operations.
In the past year, authorities have seized 503 websites tied to transnational scam centers in Southeast Asia and shut down infrastructure used for "pig butchering" schemes. These operations, often run by organized crime groups in Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines, combine romance scams, phishing and ransomware to extract funds from victims.
The Treasury Department announced in November that it had created a multi‑agency Scam Center Strike Force to target these networks. Sanctions have been imposed on entities facilitating the schemes, and nearly 9,000 U.S. citizens have been notified that they are being targeted.
While emphasizing enforcement abroad, the administration is also confronting scrutiny over its own crypto-related activities. As the 2024 midterm elections approach, allegations of self‑dealing involving digital assets held by the president and his inner circle have intensified.
The briefing will detail how seized funds are recovered and how international cooperation is being used to dismantle fraud networks that operate across borders.
