British counterterrorism authorities detained two individuals in London on Tuesday as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged scheme linked to RAF Fairford, a military airfield in Gloucestershire that serves as a key staging point for U.S. operations.
The suspects, identified as a 24-year-old British citizen and a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national from the Westminster borough, were taken into custody under powers granted by the National Security Act. Both had previously been released on bail following earlier arrests.
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command stated that investigators continue to assess the situation, noting that authorities believe Iranian state actors are likely involved. “Our assessment remains that the threat is significant,” Taylor said.
The arrests stem from an incident reported on September 27, when three vehicles were found parked near the base under circumstances prompting police response. A controlled evacuation of nearby residents was conducted while Explosive Ordnance Disposal units conducted searches.
Initial raids resulted in the detention of five men in their twenties, all of whom were later released on bail. Two additional arrests were made in early October, bringing the total number of individuals detained to seven. None have been formally charged.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that no explosive devices were discovered at the scene, though a quantity of gasoline was recovered.
In the days following the incident, U.S. military officials announced the withdrawal of all twelve B-1B Lancer bombers stationed at RAF Fairford, citing evolving security concerns and intelligence indicating a potential threat with ties to Iran.
The base, located approximately 100 miles west of London, has hosted rotating U.S. Air Force units for decades and has been used in operations related to U.S. military activities in the Middle East.
Police have not released further details about the nature of the alleged plot or the evidence supporting the claim of Iranian state involvement.
