US authorities seized a set of domains that were part of a botnet used to conduct cyberattacks against U.S. government agencies, including NASA, the Department of Justice, and the Senate. The Justice Department announced on Wednesday that the seizures rendered the botnet’s command‑and‑control infrastructure inoperable. Prosecutors said the botnet, operated by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology and linked to the state‑sponsored group QTFY, had been active since 2018 and targeted hospitals, defense contractors, and several federal departments. The compromised systems included NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Departments of Energy, Justice, Health and Human Services, and the Senate in 2026, according to a court filing. Network giant Lumen reported that the hackers had profiled government and defense sector targets for a year and shared threat intelligence with the FBI. The seizure removed domains that were hard‑coded into the botnet’s code, limiting the operators’ ability to communicate with compromised devices.
