Carhartt reported that a data breach exposed the personal information of 12.9 million individuals, roughly half of the 24.8 million records that ShinyHunters posted online on August 13. Cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt, who operates the Have I Been Pwned service, examined the leak before uploading it to his site. Hunt used the Have I Been Pwned email‑address extractor, which listed nearly 25 million addresses, and then ran the data through OpenClaw to filter out synthetic entries. After removing these and other clearly false records—including duplicate Microsoft 365 addresses and deactivated email accounts—the estimate of genuine accounts fell to 13.6 million, and further review narrowed the figure to 12,933,413 individuals. OpenClaw’s final count, reflected on the Have I Been Pwned platform, listed 12,933,413 accounts, of which 83 percent had already appeared in earlier breaches. Carhartt did not respond to a request for comment, and the company has not issued any public statement regarding the breach. The case underscores the need for caution when accepting breach size claims from criminal actors without independent verification.
